George Garlick was born in Sheffield on 10 September 1842, the son of John Garlick, a shoemaker in Upper Allen Street, and his wife, Mary neé Wilkinson. The latter was the daughter of a silver-plater. In the Census (1861), George was enumerated as a silversmith. He began business with William Mammatt, but their partnership was dissolved in 1864.
