William ‘Billy’ Carlisle was baptised in Sheffield on 16 May 1785. He was the son of Joseph Carlisle (1762-1837), a table blade forger, and his wife, Mary. By 1828, he was listed as a manufacturer of table knives at Grindlegate. By the late 1830s, he had moved to Orchard Lane and was also an ivory cutter (which suggests a link to the Carlisle brothers).
