Roger Frederic Tetley was born 8 Jun 1926 at Moonshine Lane Southey, the son of Fred and Lily Tetley. Fred was a metallurgical chemist and later became technical director of Swift Levick & Sons in Sheffield.
After attending Dronfield Grammar school, Roger studied at Sheffield Art College. As soon as he was old enough, he joined the Royal Artillery and served in India and Egypt until after the war.
After his army service, he first worked as a clerk at Dixons in Sheffield before starting out on his own in the 1950s, manufacturing and selling a magnetic car inspection lamp that he designed and provisionally patented. The company he set up, "Alloy Steel Products" continued to trade, selling tools, cutlery, scissors etc., both on market stalls and wholesale to other outlets. The cutlery was manufactured for Roger and branded as "R F Tetley & Co, Sheffield England" and also carried the 'Symbol' mark.
Roger ceased trading as "Alloy Steel Products" in the 1970s, and trained as a marine radio operator.
Roger died in Sheffield in 2006.
