These images were shared with us via our Facebook page and we believe that these butter knives were made for J. Tordoff, Gibbet Street, Halifax.
According to an advertisement in the Halifax Daily Courier and Guardian, 18 Dec 1934, the shop sold "carpets, rugs, linos, cutlery, glass and china".
The shop was owned by Joshua Tordoff (1876 - 1931), who was born in Halifax, the son of Dixon Tordoff (a dyer) and Mary Anne, his wife. Joshua started the business in 1900, originally trading from Sovereign Street in Halifax, before moving to Gibbet Street in 1908. He married Emily Watmough in Shipley in 1904 and died suddenly in 1931 of a heart attack. The business was still operating in the early 1930s, after Joshua's death.
