John Broad (1827-1889) was probably the son of William (a fender smith) his wife, and Elizabeth. By 1851, John was a spring-knife cutler, living in West John Street. By 1876, he described himself as a sportsman’s knife manufacturer, Central Works, West Street. His wife Maria died, aged 56, in 1880, and John then lived with his married daughter in Yardley Street. In the 1881 Census, he was enumerated as a ‘cutlery manufacturer’. John Broad, Burnaby Street, died on 1 September 1889, aged 62. He was buried in the same grave as his wife in the General Cemetery’s unconsecrated section.
