George Burch was the son of John, a cutler at Dungworth. George was granted his Freedom in 1776 (his brother, Enoch, in 1786). George’s trade mark was ‘SMEG+’. He was listed in Sheffield directories in 1781 and 1787 as a pen and pocket knife maker at Spring Street. In 1797, George Birch (sic) was listed at Bower Street. His name did not appear in the next Sheffield directory (1811) and he may have died. Rachel Burch was listed as a pen and pocket knife maker at Bower Spring between 1816 and 1818. This was presumably George’s widow, Rachel née Broomhead, whom he had married in Sheffield in 1776. The name of Rachel Burch appeared twice in the directory (1821): as pen knife manufacturer at Newfield; and as a widow at Chapel Street. The name then disappeared.
