A table knife manufacturer, John Carr appeared in a Sheffield directory in 1839. He was based at Hollis Croft. His early life in unknown, but he may have been baptised at Queen Street Chapel. If so, he was born on 31 March 1802, the son of John and Hannah. In the Census (1841), he was living at Crookesmoor with his wife, Ann, and their family. He continued to trade as a table knife manufacturer at Hollis Croft until his death on 11 March 1845, aged 43. Ann was listed in the directories of 1845 and 1849 as a table knife manufacturer, so pre-sumably she attempted to continue the business. However, she died at Hollis Croft on 24 April 1849, aged 46, and (like her late husband) was buried at St George’s churchyard, Portobello. In the following month, the stock, working tools, and household furniture were auctioned (Sheffield Independent, 26 May 1849).
