James Henry Coe (1827-1885) was the son of Thomas (a labourer) and his wife, Elizabeth. By 1852, James was a pocket knife manufacturer in Attercliffe, who later operated at Nursery Wheel, Stanley Street. He had several sons, some of whom – Walter (1848-1932), Thomas (1851-1911), Clifton (1853-1918), and Albert (1854-1913) – joined the business. James (who also sold groceries and beer) died at Industry Road on 23 March 1885, leaving £595. He was buried in Attercliffe. The firm became James Coe & Sons, though ‘Coe Bros, Stanley Street’ has been found on pocket knives (information from Frank Hudson). By the War, the address was Shiloh Wheel, Stanley Street. After 1918, Albert’s son, Ernest (1882-1970), was active in the firm, which traded until about 1932.
