John Farr (bapt.1782-1858) was born in Sheffield, the son of Thomas (a cutler) and his wife, Hannah. He manufactured pen and pocket knives. From 1816 until the early 1850s, John Farr was listed in Rockingham Street, with a residential address at Mount Pisgah after 1837. Possibly, this was the John Farr who served a seven-year apprenticeship to his father, Thomas, from 1797 and became a Freeman in either 1805 or 1810 (Leader, 1905-6, was undecided on the date1). John Farr, Fulwood, died on 20 May 1858, aged 75. He left effects under £100 and was buried in Ecclesall. His wife, Elizabeth, died on 29 May 1860, aged 77.
