This maker of silver and plated tables knives was listed in 1787 at Eyre Street. Its trade mark was ‘W. GREEN & CO’ and a picture of a pistol. The same name and device had been registered at the Assay Office in 1784, as the first entry in its list of marks for plated goods (Assay Office, 19081). William Green had as partners Robert Sporle and John Cooke (an iron merchant). But by 1792, they had left. In 1797, W. Green & Co continued to be listed at Eyre Street as a manufacturer of silver and plated hafted table knives. In that year, William Green and Hammond Blake, cutlers, dissolved their partnership. Since W. Green & Co disappeared after that date, this was probably the William Green. Unfortunately, no personal details (such as his date of death) have been traced. Another partnership making table knives – James and William Green – appeared later. But it was dissolved in 1812 and, again, no information has been found on the principals.
