William Henry Bolton (1905-1950) established this enterprise in 1936. He had worked for J. Gibbins & Sons and John Watts and used that experience to strike out on his own. He rented a small workshop at the back of 32 Carver Street and began working on surgical instruments, such as scissors and forceps. He was soon joined by his son, William Seedhouse Bolton (born 1928). Wartime demand boosted business and in 1942 Bolton moved to larger premises in Eyre Lane, though the firm only employed nine workers (some part-time). Bolton’s products were exported to Canada (to the Dental Co, Toronto) and other countries in the British Empire. W. H. Bolton, Anthony Road, died at the General Hospital on 5 May 1950, leaving £2,647. The burial was at Crookes. In 1982, the firm was incorporated as Bolton Surgical Services Ltd, with instrument repair and maintenance as part of its work. William Seedhouse Bolton and his son, Peter William, were the partners. Bolton’s took over scissors maker, Thomas Rudd. In 2011, the company (capitalised at £62,500) was based in Chapeltown, near Sheffield, and described itself as the largest independently-owned surgical instrument firm in the UK. A decade later, the firm operated under Lyndsey Bolton, the great-great-granddaughter of the founder.
