George Winter Harris (c.1823-1903), a Britannia metal manufacturer, was born in Sheffield. In 1843, he married at Sheffield Jane née Slack. On the marriage certificate, his father’s name was stated as John (a map publisher in Sheffield). George moved to Birmingham, but was insolvent in 1848. By the 1850s, he had returned to Sheffield and advertised in 1859 as a manufacturer of Britannia metal and electro-plate wares at Castle Works, Arundel Street. Harris later partnered John Mason in Harris & Mason, Britannia metal manufacturer, ‘back of’ 34 Parade, Birmingham. However, this was dissolved in 1880. Harris was in Sheffield in 1881, but later lived with his son-in-law’s family in Birmingham. In the Census in 1891, he was a ‘manager’; in 1901 he was living on his own means. He died at Birmingham on 9 February 1903, aged 80, from old age.
