Francis John Hurst (1878-1957) was born in Sheffield, the son of James and Kezia Hurst. His father was a cutlery manufacturer’s clerk (later a bookkeeper in a water works). Francis worked as an errand boy, but by the end of the century was a cutlery fluter. He was a little mester, whose speciality was carving ivory handles for table cutlery. By 1911, he had a workshop in Holly Street, until the buildings in that street were demolished for a new City Hall. He then had two workshops in Brook Bros, Cambridge Street. His daughter was Eileen Hurst (later Armitage). He worked until his death on 18 March 1957, leaving £197 to his widow, Ethel.
