Samuel Smith Middleton (1817-1878) was born in Sheffield, the son of Joseph (a silver plater) and Ann. By 1841, he was a razor maker, living in Matilda Street. He was listed in the 1840s in Charles Street as a dealer in cutlery, cabinet case maker, and seller of razors and razor strops. In 1851, he worked in Eyre Street (‘partly employing 25 men’) and lived at Osborne Cottage, Button Hill. He was bankrupt by 1852, though he appears to have been discharged and continued for a time as a cutlery dealer. By the 1860s, however, he was an agent for insurers, wine and spirits dealers, and brewers. In 1869, he lost his job with Dublin Brewery Co, after failing to file his monthly sales returns. He sued the firm and lost. Samuel Middleton, ‘agent’, Harwood Street, died on 29 March 1878, aged 61. He was buried with the remains of his wife Emma in an unconsecrated grave in the General Cemetery.
