Thomas Peckett was born in Sheffield in about 1824, the son of Timothy Peckett and his wife Elizabeth. Timothy was a stone mason, who when he died in 1873 was described as a builder, Butchers’ Works, Penistone Road. Thomas was apprenticed as a razor smith, but he later specialised in hafting razors. He worked for 42 years for Joseph Rodgers & Sons, where he was known as a high-class workman. He made razors for the first Emperor of Germany and several royal princes. ‘By frugality and diligent work he was able when 63 years of age to retire from business …’ (Sheffield Daily Telegraph, 9 April 1903). Thomas Peckett, Sunnybank, Broomhall Park, died on 9 April 1903, aged 79. He was buried in the General Cemetery, leaving £3,844 (Joseph W. Ibberson was one of his executors). His wife, Elizabeth, had died in 1896 (they were interred in the same grave).
