Edwin Round (1830-1883) was born in Harborne, Staffordshire. He was the son of John Round and his wife Elizabeth. He joined his father’s silver and electro-plate business and by the 1860s had become the ‘son’ in John Round & Son. In 1870, the company became insolvent and Edwin formed his own enterprise. In 1875, he launched Edwin Round & Co, with a capital of £10,000. In the same year, a silver mark was registered from Holly Street. The company proved a disaster. Edwin Round was the managing director, but after various disagreements in 1876 he was sacked by his fellow directors John Askham (steel maker), John Delaney (general dealer), and Edward Wilkinson Shirt (gentleman, Rotherham). The firm became ‘Ltd’ in 1878. An attempt to sell the business for £3,250 to Henry Harrison and George Howson (see Harrison Bros & Howson) led to a court case, which Round’s lost (Sheffield Independent, 9 March 1878). In 1881, Edwin Round’s was wound up, having never made a profit. Edwin Round died at Powick, near Worcester, on 20 October 1883, aged 54.
