Several cutlers with the name ‘John Wortley’ appear in the listing of Freemen by Leader (1905-06)1. They were scissors smiths. The last two Freedoms granted were in 1788 and 1810. In directories, John Wortley was listed in 1787 as a fine scissors manufacturer, in Trinity Street. The trade mark was ‘AIM’. The address of John Wortley & Co was later sometimes given as Gibraltar – the road at the foot of Trinity Street. In 1822, the firm was listed as John Wortley & Son, merchants, factors, and scissors manufacturers, Trinity Street. David Wortley, scissors manufacturer, was also listed separately in Gibraltar (and again in 1833). John Wortley & Son apparently ceased trading after 1828. John Wortley, scissors manufacturer (presumably the ‘Son’), Portobello Street, died on 26 August 1829 (aged 43). He was buried at St Peter & St Paul churchyard.
