William Yates (1843-1913) was the son of William Yates and Amelia née Egginton. His mother was related to the Eggintons, who were involved in brass turning and silver ferrule manufacture in Broad Lane and Hollis Croft. William Yates Jun. became a manufacturer of silver ferrules for table knives. In 1876, he acquired premises in Rockingham Street and two years registered a silver mark (WY). Another mark (W.Y) was registered in 1903. William Yates lived in Moor Oaks Road and died on 3 September 1913, leaving £4,487. He and his wife, Eliza née Herring, apparently had a dozen children. Two sons, Albert and Joseph, formed Yates Bros. The eleventh child, Harold Yates (1889-1961), took over his father’s firm, which remained in Rockingham Street. In turn, Harold’s son, William Rodney Yates (1919-2005), managed the company. After Harold’s death, the firm was incorporated in 1962 and moved into Challenge Works in Arundel Street. Graham William Yates (b.1950) – William Rodney’s son – was the last family member to operate the company. In the first decade of the twentieth century, the Yates’ name was acquired by Chimo Holdings.
