Richard Cowlishaw (c.1789-1878) was born in Collingham, Nottinghamshire. He was probably the ‘clerk’ listed in 1822 in South Street. In the late 1820s, he apparently partnered Robert Penistone (or Pennistone) as a fine scissors manufacturer. However, Penistone & Cowlishaw ended in 1829 (Penistone was bankrupt in 1835). Cowlishaw next became a commercial agent, who was based in West Street (1833) and Hanover Street (1837). In 1849, he was listed in Orchard Place as merchant and manufacturer of edge tools, saws, files, and table knives. He may have acquired the mark of Benjamin Fenton. He lived in Northumberland Avenue and had retired by 1860. He died on 17 June 1878, aged 89, and was buried in the General Cemetery in an unconsecrated grave (he was a Wesleyan Methodist). He left £249. His son, Richard, died at Queen’s Road, Southport, on 1 August 1900, aged 83. He left £1,499.
