George Moore (c.1776-1850) was a scissors and table knife manufacturer, who was listed in Burgess Street (1816), South Street (1822), and 21 Arundel Street (1828). He was bankrupt in 1829, when he auctioned his unfinished stock (a thousand articles) and finished items (numbered in the hundreds). The press advertisement stated: ‘The manufactory of Mr Moore has long been celebrated for superior workmanship’ (Sheffield Independent, 30 May 1829). Moore remained listed in Arundel Street (with a residence in Bramall Lane) in 1833. In 1841, he was living in Joiner Street, apparently retired with his wife Ann. George Moore, ‘formerly merchant and manufacturer of this town’, died at Shrewsbury Hospital, Sheffield, on 30 July 1850, aged 74. He was buried in Ecclesall.
