George Robert Townend was born in Sheffield in 1857, the son of John Townend (a land agent and surveyor from Lincolnshire) and his wife Elizabeth. In 1861, the family’s address was Holly Edge, Townend Street. George became an estate agent and collector, but by 1884 was advertising from Paradise Square as a manufacturer of table, pocket, and other types of cutlery. By the 1890s, he was concentrating on edge tools at Albany Works, Radford Street. Until 1905, he partnered Tom Rodney Hand. The business had apparently ceased trading by 1919. George R. Townend may have died in 1933.
