George H. Hulley (c.1837-1909) was born in Shiregreen, the son of Thomas Hulley, a fork maker, and his wife, Sarah. George, too, worked as a fork maker until in 1887 he registered a silver mark from Central Spoon & Fork Works, Cambridge Street. He registered further silver marks from that address in 1892 and 1899. Directories listed Hulley as a manufacturer of electro-plated goods. In 1900, the works address was Ecclesall Works, Rockingham Street. He lived at Stanley Villa, Abbeydale Road, with his wife Harriet. At the time of his death, he resided at The Poplars, Abbeydale Road. Harriet died in 1906; George on 13 October 1909, aged 72, leaving £9,490. Their remains lie in Ecclesall churchyard.
The business was left to Hulley’s manager, Thomas Morris, and continued to be listed at 245 Rockingham Street in the interwar years. After 1945, George H. Hulley was listed as a stainless cutlery manufacturer, Sykes Works, Milton Street. It apparently became defunct in 1960. The trade mark was a pillar box.
